Give your clothes a botanical “flash tattoo”

Do you have old, stained clothes that you don’t wear anymore? Stains don’t need to spell the end of a garment’s useful life; instead, they’re an opportunity to add flair to your wardrobe! You can rescue clothes from the landfill and give them a stylish twist at Nature’s Ink, a textile transformation workshop at the Sooke Region Museum.
Instructor Chantel Traub is a Calgary-based textile artist currently undertaking a residency at Studio H Canada in Metchosin. Her practice is rooted in nature, exploring links between art and ecosystems.
She’ll bring carbon-negative algae ink and her large collection of hand-cut lino blocks depicting native plants and animals. All you need are pieces of clothing that have small stains to cover or just need an added “flash tattoo”!
Alternatively, if you’d rather explore paper media, Chantel will also provide high-quality cardstock to create hand-stamped cards.

Reskilling Workshop with Zero Waste Sooke
Saturday 13 Jun | 10:00am-1:00pm | $15/person
Mend It and wear it again!
Learn basic mending skills and/or how to turn old garments or material scraps into something new (“Upcycling”) e.g. old jeans to turn into bags or favourite shirts into a skirt. Were you given a sewing machine and need to learn how to use it? Bring it along.
What to bring: items to be mended or upcycled and any equipment or supplies needed such as a scissors or a sewing machine.
We will provide: 2 sewing machines, an ironing board and iron, pins, needles, buttons, thread, velcro, elastic, a few scissors and old patterns and some cloth. There are outlets if you would like to bring your sewing machine.

Flexible Registration Fees for Reskilling Workshops
If the registration fee is a barrier to you participating in the reskilling workshops, contact the Museum (250-642-6351 or info@sookeregionmuseum.ca) and we can reduce or waive the fee.
If you are able to pay a bit more for registration, you will have the option at checkout to donate money to these reskilling workshops to remove financial barriers for others.
Note about registration:
Registration and payment can be online (using buttons above) or by phoning or visiting the Museum. The online system we use (Amilia) will require that you have an account, but once you’ve created that account your information is there for future registration (and saved in Quebec, as Amilia is a Canadian system).

Members of the Sooke Region Historical Society can receive a 15% discount for workshops.
