Black History Month & Freedom to Read Week
For Black History Month, learn about black settlers in BC with Go Do Some Great Thing by Crawford Kilian (Harbour Publishing). For a contemporary perspective, look for Dreams for Earth by Sooke-based author Faitma-Ayan Malika Hirsi. Support local book sellers by picking up a copy of these at the Sooke Region Museum Gift & Bookshop.

Is there a challenged book you want to read, but don’t get to the local library often? Email us at shop@sookeregionmuseum.ca and we will add it to our next batch of book orders. This won’t be as fast a service as an online purchase, but you’ll save shipping fees and get to stop in for a hello at your friendly neighbourhood museum. 🙂

Our gift & bookshop carries an extensive collection of Canadian authors and illustrators with a focus on BC publications. We feature titles that include Indigenous stories & histories, settler histories, field & identification guides, children’s books, cookbooks, gardening, and more. We also carry regional travel guides to inspire your trip planning at the Sooke Region Visitor Centre.
Carvings
Support Indigenous artists with original carvings from local nuu-chah-nulth and Coast Salish carvers. These hand carved artworks make beautiful gifts that represent makers who have lived on this island since time immemorial.
