THE HISTORY AND THE HEARTBEAT

INDIGENOUS HISTORIES

Indigenous people in the Sooke Region have been here since time immemorial and to continue to maintain strong relations to the land and waters. The Sooke Region Museum sits on the lands of the T’SOU-KE First Nation, and our mandate encompasses the territories of the SC’IANEW and pacheedaht First Nations. You’re invited to witness cultural belongings from T’SOU-KE, SC’IANEW, and pacheedaht. We strive to work in collaboration with local Nations and Indigenous people when we develop new displays.

SETTLER HISTORIES

The region’s settler history began hundreds of years ago when Spanish explorer Manuel Quimper landed at across from Whiffin Spit on 23 June 1790. Many people have called the Sooke region home. Get to know the Sooke region and its people through our indoor displays!
