TRIANGLE ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

The ocean was the historic gateway to Sooke and the surrounding coastal centers. From the days when First Nations peoples traveled by dugout, in both ceremonial and war canoes, the ocean was the main route for travel and commerce. Lighthouse provided essential wayfinding for mariners for travel. Learn more about Triangle Island Lighthouse below:

LORD WESTERN SHIPWRECK

On 2 December 1853, the Lord Western sailed from the Sooke harbour, bound for San Francisco. The ship carried pilings, squared timbers, and barrels of salted fish. Shortly after departure, disaster struck and the Lord Western was driven ashore at Sydney Inlet, on the Northwest coast of Vancouver Island. A century later, the team from the Sooke Region Museum set out to salvage some of the pilings that you can see on display during your visit.
